Placenta Encapsulation FAQ
When do i need to book in for placenta encapsulation?
I recommend to book in as soon as you know you want to encapsulate so we can both be prepared. Anytime before 38 weeks is best.
Do I need to let the Midwife/Obstetrician know before birth that I want to keep my placenta?
I recommend letting everyone in your birth space know your plans for your placenta. When in labour remind the midwife/obstetrician so they can be prepared.
How do I store my placenta for collection?
Your placenta should be put into a clean, leak proof container, hospitals will usually have a white plastic bucket to use. After cord cutting and inspection by a midwife/doctor, your placenta needs to be double bagged and plenty of ice needs to be added to the container/bucket with the placenta on top.
If at home please have available 2 large ziplock freezer bags for the placenta, a clean 2L Tupperware or Ice cream container. Then follow the same instructions above.
- Ice into the container, place the placenta in the double ziplock bags on top of the ice, put on the lid and clearly label.
If the placenta is not collected within the first 4hours after birth ie; you birth overnight - the placenta will need to be refrigerated or you need to keep adding fresh ice to the bucket or possibly take the placenta home where pick up arrangements can be made.
Can I have my placenta encapsulated if I have tested positive for Group B Strep or if meconium is present?
Yes! The TCM (steaming) method is recommended as the steaming of the placenta prior to dehydration will kill the bacteria. Please advise if you have tested positive or meconium was present, so I can prepare your placenta using the TCM method.

When can my placenta NOT be encapsulated?
If the placenta is not stored properly after birth or sent to pathology for testing, if an infection is suspected in mum during birth or baby after birth, encapsulation is not recommended.
If I have a caesarean section, induction or medicated birth can I still get my placenta encapsulated?
Yes! At Purely placenta and keepsakes we know that things don't always go to plan, however it is absolutely fine to still encapsulate.
How should I store my capsules?
In a cool, dark cupboard is recommend. Not in the fridge.
How many capsules will I get?
The amount of capsules varies due to the size of your placenta and method used. Usually anywhere between 80 and 200 is expected.
Jewellery FAQ
What is keepsake jewellery?
Keepsake jewellery is dedicated to honouring the memorial of someone/something special. Keepsakes are preserved and set in resin to create a beautiful jewellery keepsake. Each piece is custom-made, capturing these special memories forever.
How much breastmilk is needed for the jewellery?
5-10 ml each jewellery piece is needed to create your custom jewellery. Even if your milk is older or you have stopped breastfeeding, it can still be used however I recommend never sending me the last of anything, always keep some spares.
Will the color of the breastmilk change over time?
While the milk’s exact shade may vary depending on its composition, the preservation process ensures that the color remains stable, giving your jewellery a timeless look.
However the resin that is used can develop an amber hue over time.
How do I send you my breastmilk?
Put your breastmilk in a sterile breastmilk storage bag (all breastmilk storage bags are sterile) and then in in another leakproof zip lock bag, removing as much as as you can. Your milk may spoil if it is not sent in another other storage. It’s important to ensure it is sealed properly to avoid any leaks during transit.
How do I measure my ring size?
We recommend getting your ring size checked with a professional jeweller to be certain of your ring size. Orders cannot be changed once the process of making the jewellery begins.

How do I care for my jewellery piece?
Breastmilk jewellery should be treated gently. Avoid exposing it to water, chemicals, or direct sunlight for long periods. When not wearing it, store it in a cool, dry place.
Is the keepsake jewellery durable?
While the resin creates a strong and protective seal, jewellery is a delicate keepsake and should be treated with care to ensure its longevity.
Can other elements be added to the jewellery?
Yes! In addition to breastmilk, you can include other sentimental items like a lock of hair, umbilical cord, dried placenta or ashes. I also offer options to add shimmer or birthstones for a personal touch.
How long will it take to receive my order?
The entire process, from receiving your milk to creating and finishing the jewellery, typically takes 4-8 weeks. I will keep you updated throughout the process.
What types of jewellery can I order?
You can choose from a range of options such as rings, pendants for necklaces. Round, oval and tear drop shape are also available. Custom designs may be available if you have something specific in mind.
Can I change my order?
Once you've placed your order amendments cannot be made. Please make sure you know exactly what you want before placing your order.
